What might healing look like now?

Understanding trauma can take considerable strength. Perhaps you've explored your past, recognised familiar patterns and developed a deeper understanding of how your experiences have shaped you.

That understanding can make a real difference. You may recognise strengths you didn't know you had and appreciate how the ways you adapted helped you survive difficult circumstances.

Yet despite all this, you might still sense that something remains unresolved. Something difficult to explain, as though a part of your experience hasn't quite found its place.

When understanding and healing feel different

We can understand what happened to us without necessarily feeling differently about it.

We might know we're safe now, yet still feel threatened. We might understand why we respond in certain ways, but find those responses haven't changed.

Sometimes, experiences have been so painful that distancing ourselves from aspects of them was the only way to cope.

That separation may have helped us survive. But later in life, we may feel the absence of something within ourselves, even when we've made considerable progress.

Healing can involve gradually reconnecting with those parts of our experience, finding ways to acknowledge the pain without being overwhelmed by it.

We can feel sadness for the person we were, recognise the injustice of what happened and accept that the pain belongs to our history. It's still our pain, but it doesn't have to be experienced as though we're living through it today.

We cannot change our past, but we may change how we carry it.

          How can counselling help?

Counselling doesn't have to mean repeating work you've already done.

Different approaches can offer different ways of exploring what remains unresolved, including working with emotional and bodily responses, relationships, visualisation, creative approaches and parts integration.

The therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client can also provide opportunities to recognise and explore feelings that have been difficult to access.

At Hazelwood, our counsellors bring different therapeutic approaches and expertise to their work. We offer trauma-informed counselling in Retford, West Bridgford and online, recognising the understanding and progress you've already made.
