Families, in all their forms, can be positive forces in our lives. They can provide us with a sense of who we are and be a reliable source of go-to support. On the flip side, families can also impact negatively causing anxiety, depression and misunderstanding.
This is where family therapy can help. It looks at how family members relate to each other and it focuses on the family as a whole unit. In this way, it helps family members to understand each other better, change negative behaviours and resolve conflicts. It is appropriate for all ages and can even be useful for individuals.
Family therapy can be useful in any family situation that causes stress, grief, anger or conflict. It can help you and your family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring you closer together.
At Hazelwood, we give families the chance to express and explore their feelings in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Working alongside a specialist counsellor, families can safely discuss difficulties and differences with the aim of improving communication and together, finding a way forward.
Our approach is one of consideration to every member of the family and avoids any sense of “ganging up”. It’s not always the entire family we work with and may only work with certain members. The term family can cover a range of relationships and is generally used to describe a group of people who care about each other and call each other “family”.
