Tackling Depression

It’s natural to have times in our lives when we feel deeply sad, particularly in response to a distressing situation. Depression is different to this; depression is like being stuck in an alternative negative reality which makes living day-to-day feel dreadful.

Sometimes people might know what has triggered their depression and sometimes it just seems as if it came out of nowhere. Depression can often be sparked by a major life change such as relationship separation, family problems, bereavement, retirement, illness or trauma. Events such as these can all take its toll on us and significantly alter how we feel.

Without tackling depression, the depression itself can become self-propelling and we get stuck in a cycle. We can even get depressed about being depressed. This might then lead to feelings of guilt which reinforces our negativity. On top of this things like those “Think Yourself Positive” programmes can also add to our negativity as they fail to acknowledge the levels of despair we might be feeling.

People who feel depressed are often lethargic and totally exhausted; others cover up their depression with the misuse of alcohol or drugs. Among the other symptoms of depression are feeling:

  • Worthless
  • Like life isn’t worth living
  • Constantly anxious, tearful and worried
  • Like you can’t concentrate
  • Indecisive
  • Irritable and intolerant of others
  • You are not getting enough enjoyment out of life
  • You have a lack of self-esteem
  • You have excessive and inappropriate guilt
  • You have no motivation or interest in things you used to enjoy

The good news is that depression can get better and we can move on, but there are no instant solutions. Counselling can significantly help improve depression and we offer counselling for different types of depression, including:

  • Major Depression
  • Mild Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Postnatal Depression
  • Seasonal Affected Disorder
